NIU KQi3 Pro

Black Friday Sale: $649.00 $799.00

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

NIU KQi3 Pro Overview:

The scooter community has been like an excitable litter of kittens waiting for the launch of NIU’s new line of models. We were promised affordable commuter hotshots that represent a high-water mark in design and build quality – and that’s exactly what we’ve got.

The KQi3 Pro – along with its predecessor, the KQi2 Pro, and feistier upgrade, the KQi3 Max – are the impressive new kids on the block that have left every other kid feeling a little insecure. Armed with award-winning design flourishes, a lengthy range, and a next-generation battery management system, the KQi3 Pro brings the X factor whilst being a super comfortable ride.

It stands head and shoulder above its competitors in the sub-$800 category – in truth, it’s playing a whole different ball game.

Josh Standing with the NIU KQi3 Pro

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the NIU KQi3 Pro:

Let’s start with the essential ingredient of any long-range scooter: its battery. The KQi3 Pro sports a high-quality 48V 10Ah lithium unit that has 486Wh in its locker. This translates into a maximum range of 31 miles, or 22 miles when factoring in real-world conditions – which include periods of fast acceleration, cruising at speeds of 20 mph, and multiple stops.

When you run out of juice, it can be recharged in as little as 6 hours.

NIU KQi3 Pro Front Fork and Tire

But what makes this battery a veritable show-stopper is the patented battery management system that supplies 14 types of protection to ensure it charges and discharges within safe operating limits. This not only maintains battery health but guarantees a higher number of miles per watt-hour than the typical scooters that fall within its price class. NIU claims that this system has safely carried riders over 10 billion kilometers.

Josh Cruising on the NIU KQi3 Pro

What’s more impressive, though, is the two-year warranty that NIU places on the battery. This is among the best offered by all the brands and retailers in the industry – especially when compared to competitors like GoTrax and Turboant, who offer just 6-months of cover. This is a clear indicator of how much confidence NIU has in the quality of the KQi3 Pro’s battery.

NIU KQi3 Pro Deck

Another element that bolsters its ability as a top-grade long-range model, is its 10-inch tires. Measuring 9.5 x 2.5 inches they’re 25% thicker than the tires that you’ll find on scooters with similar performance specs.

Add to this a tread and profile that’s been designed to maximize the scooter’s maneuverability, and you have an exceptionally nimble scooter. Thanks to their tubeless design, they put a layer of shock absorption between you and the road, too.

NIU KQi3 Pro Tire

Then there’s the 39.5-inch deck-to-handlebar height and 21.3-inch wide cockpit. Together, these dimensions are a great fit for riders of all heights (including those over 6 ft), whilst they also serve as a solid foundation to maintain stability when pushing the 350W motor to the limit of its 20 mph top speed.

You’ll have no problem reaching this limit in a quick time, either. The KQi3 Pro accelerates from 0-15 mph in 5.0 seconds flat. Yet, if you did want to turn the acceleration dial up a notch, you could always invest some extra dollars in the KQi3 Max, which is 14% faster thanks to its bigger 48V 450W motor.

NIU KQi3 Pro Accelerating

Nevertheless, riding the KQi3 Pro is an enjoyable experience and the ergonomically designed thumb throttle plays a big role in this. Modulating the power of the motor is serenely smooth, and thanks to its angular form it’s comfortable to use for the duration of long-range rides.

NIU KQi3 Pro Ergonomic Cockpit

Equally impressive is the braking system. It’s the only scooter in the sub-$800 class to have dual mechanical brakes and a variable regen system.

The harder you squeeze on the brake levers, the more regen braking you get. You can also use it without using the mechanical brakes where it kicks into action as soon as you release the throttle. The key benefit here is that it recycles the kinetic energy from braking back into the battery to recharge it, thereby extending your mileage. Better still, you can adjust its strength via the mobile app.

NIU KQi3 Pro Wide Handlebars

With all of the brakes working in harmony, it will bring you to a safe stop from 15 mph in an outstanding 2.2 meters.

Coming complete with a top-of-the-range lighting rig that includes NIU’s iconic halo headlight, this is a scooter that fuses flawless design with standard-setting performance to produce a package purpose-made for modern life.

Apollo Ghost 2022

Black Friday Sale: $1,599.00 $1,799.00

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

Apollo Ghost Overview:

The Apollo Ghost 2022 doesn’t mess around with vanity features or fancy trimmings. No, this frightful spook is all about delivering exceptional performance at a price that won’t haunt your dreams.

From its otherworldly top range of 39 miles and adrenaline-inducing powerful dual 52V 1000W motors; to the reinforced stem and reinvented folding mechanism: the new Ghost is a case study of why listening to your customers and acting on their feedback should be the hallmark of any scooter brand worth its weight in gold.

Josh on Apollo Ghost 2022

Best scooter under $1,800? Numero uno when it comes to entry-level performance models? The Apollo Ghost 2022 will strike fear into pretenders who have their eyes on either throne.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Durable Chassis

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the Apollo Ghost:

Firstly, this is Apollo. That means nigh-on unmatchable build quality, exceptional ride quality, and sizzling performance. All three of these elite traits are crucial when it comes to talking about long-range scooters.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Front Swingarm

Clocking in with a top range of 39 miles, or a still hugely impressive 25 miles at high speeds, the Ghost 2022 wields a 52V 18.2Ah lithium battery you can hang your hat on for 946 Watt-hours. Importantly, it comes complete with a smart power management system that protects from short-circuiting, overheating, overcharging, and undervoltage. This prolongs the life of the battery while enhancing its efficiency.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Charging Port

Standing on a scooter for up to 39 miles, however, has the potential to be about as fun as a poltergeist haunting. A good design is vital for the well-being of your back, shoulders, and joints – thankfully, the Apollo Ghost 2022 excels in this area.

Standing at 50-inches, the handlebars are high enough for taller riders to avoid uncomfortable crouching, while short enough for other riders to retain control. Crucially, the newly designed stem is 50% stronger than that sported by the Apollo Ghost 2021. This mercifully eliminates bone-shuddering wobbles at higher speeds.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Stem and Handlebars

The fortified robustness on show here is a critical improvement, especially considering the beefed-up dual 1000W motors that have replaced the previous Ghost’s 800W offerings. Together they produce a rip-roaring top speed of 37 mph, which may at first feel profoundly supernatural if you’re new to performance scooters. We’d suggest going easy on the throttle if that’s the case.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Powerful Rear Motor

Predictably, the combined battery and motor strength wielded by the Ghost make it a certified hill-eater. Steep inclines are well within its ice-cold grasp, though this will depend on how close you are to its 300 lbs load capacity.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Large Deck

One area that will not be impacted by such factors, however, is the silky smooth ride quality. The adjustable front and rear suspension work in tandem with plush 10-inch tires to deliver a cushioned ride that will leave you feeling like Casper the Friendly Ghost as you glide down streets and dirt tracks. You’ll be craving more – even at mile 39.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Push Tire

Elsewhere, the deck is spacious enough for riders of all sizes to feel safe and secure. The one thing we would say, though, is that it comes with just two grip strips, and you may want to buy some additional tape for added security.

A standout feature of the new Ghost is its new and improved folding mechanism. Aided by a built-in latch and easy-to-use lever, you can now have the stem folded down in mere seconds. This is in stark contrast to the previous clunky collar clamp, which was onerous to deal with.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Folding Mechanism Being Pinched

Interestingly, the handlebars are also foldable. This places the Ghost 2022 at a unique intersection between portability and performance, which will appeal to riders seeking to inject their daily routine with added thrills.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Frame Folded

Though weighing a relatively hefty 64 lbs – making the Ghost difficult to carry for any sustained length – its foldability does mean it can easily be stored under a desk, in a trunk, or at home.

As is to be expected from an Apollo scooter, there are no shortcuts when it comes to braking. The Ghost 2022 can be purchased either with regular discs or, for $200 extra, hydraulics.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Hydraulic Disc Brake

While this guide focuses on the regular version, we would seriously recommend investing the extra money in hydraulics if your budget permits. With them, you can come to a complete stop from 15 mph in just 3.0 meters – this is a match for the 2021 hydraulic model and is nearly two feet shorter than what you’ll achieve on the regular Ghost. That said, the mechanical brakes still do an ample job.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Brake Lever

Living up to its “no frills, high thrills” billing, the Ghost 2022 comes with a pretty basic QS-S4 display. This isn’t necessarily a criticism; it’s simple and pretty unassuming, supplying stats on your speed, battery life, and odometer with no fuss. The screen is bright, colorful, and unlike others that we’ve tested, can be seen in direct sunlight.

Apollo Ghost 2022 Display

Using the console’s button, you can toggle between three riding modes, as well as activate the scooter’s radiant lighting rig, which consists of deck-embedded headlights, taillights, and a strip of LEDs. The one thing it's missing is a high-mounted headlight for more visibility.

Apollo Ghost Rear Brake Light

When all’s said and done, the Apollo Ghost is a triumph for a brand that refuses to rest on its laurels. This ceaseless drive to improve has culminated in a model that is better than its previous incarnation in every way. It stands alone as a unique blend of portability and power – and for that, it’s well worth its $1,599 price tag.

Apollo Phantom

Black Friday Sale: $1,999.00 $2,399.00

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

Apollo Phantom Overview:

One of the most anticipated scooters for many a year – and for good reason – the Apollo Phantom V3 takes the supernaturally successful blueprint laid down by previous iterations but dials up the range, speed, and stakes.

Featuring the new spine-tingly smooth MACH1 controller, a regen brake paddle, a seriously ergonomic cockpit, a quadruple suspension system, and an impressive 40-mile range, the Phantom V3 is more than a set of wheels – it’s the harbinger of a next-gen scooter experience.

There’s a multitude of reasons why this scooter has sent shivers running through the HQs of its rivals, but fundamentally it boils down to one of the best brands raising the bar on what’s possible when design and performance are treated as one.

Apollo Phantom V3 Swingarm

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the Apollo Phantom:

Like the look of the Apollo Ghost, but fancy something with a slightly longer range, more power, premium specs, and a luxurious finish? Say no more – because the Apollo Phantom V3 will be right up your alley.

Apollo Phantom V3 Frame

While it uses the same high-quality battery cells as the Ghost, it boasts a 52V 23.4Ah battery and the new MACH1 controller – which promises a 27% improvement in efficiency compared to the controller of the Phantom V2.

This manifests into a maximum range of 40 miles as long as you maintain a slow and steady pace. Under our tests, however, where the riding conditions included me as a 190 lb rider, a circuit of undulating city streets, and periods of fast acceleration, cruising, and multiple stops, the real-world range came in at 29 miles.

Josh With the Apollo Phantom V3

Another huge tick is its proprietary design. Everything fits together like pieces of a jigsaw. The V3 introduces a brand new LX display panel, for instance, which enables you to keep tabs on your speed, distance traveled, and remaining mileage – not to mention access to the all-new Ludo mode.

Apollo Phantom V3 Ludo Mode on Display

With Ludo mode enabled, you can hit speeds of up to 41 mph, while it tears from 0-15 mph in a dizzying 2.3 seconds. By comparison, it's 14% faster off the line than its predecessor, the V2.

Apollo Phantom V3 Being Ridden

Even just a passing glance at the V3 is enough for its pedigree to shine through – and nowhere is this more apparent than from the concaved, ultra-wide handlebars that flare out at the ends. They guarantee balance and control in tandem with the generous deck – which sets the industry standard for how all scooters should be designed.

Apollo Phantom V3 Handlebars

Then there are the tires. At 10 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide with a slightly deeper and more rugged tread than your average tire, they’re designed to soak up the stresses of more strenuous surfaces while maintaining traction throughout. As a result, the V3’s handling is second-to-none, with exceptional control while accelerating, braking, and cornering.

Apollo Phantom V3 Front Springs

And thankfully, these tires are backed up by the same quadruple suspension system that blew us away on the previous Phantom. Four springs – all facing downward at a 45-degree angle – combine with swingarms to allow for plenty of travel. These springs also come equipped with rubber bushings at their base to absorb some of the bouncing action, meaning the suspension never feels too springy or spongey.

Apollo Phantom V3 Rear Fender

But even this system is upstaged by the presence of the first-ever dedicated regenerative brake paddle on a performance scooter. Not only does this spare the disc brakes from wear and tear, but it recharges the battery by up to 10%. Using all of the brakes at once will bring you to a stop from 15 mph in an impressive 2.1 meters.

Two other star additions to the Phantom V3’s spec sheet are the new mobile app and lights.

Adjusting Acceleration and Braking Strength of Apollo Pro in Mobile App

The app opens up a world of customization, allowing you to:

  • Dial in the strength of the regen brake and acceleration
  • Adjust your top speed, as well as the speed of each riding mode
  • Turn cruise control on/off, and set the time it takes before it automatically kicks in
  • Turn the digital lock on/off, which immobilizes the scooter by applying the electronic brakes
  • Turn the lights on/off
  • Toggle between kick-to-start and zero-start modes
  • Use it as a navigational device (i.e. follow a route to your destination)
  • Get range estimates based on your most recent riding pattern
  • Record trips

As for the lighting rig, the 1000-lumen headlight is bright enough to see where you're going at night, whilst the responsive taillight and suite of turn signals that flash at the front and rear of the deck keep you safe.

Apollo Phantom V3 Lights

Ultimately, there are just a handful of models that combine exquisite design with graceful handling and immense power, and the Apollo Phantom V3 is one of those rarities.

NIU KQi3 Max

Black Friday Sale: $749.00 $999.00
NIU KQi3 Pro

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

NIU KQi3 Max Overview:

So, you may have read our review of the illustrious NIU KQi3 Pro. “Sounds great”, you’re thinking, “but I need something with more range and a faster top speed.” Well, it just so happens that it has an altogether more fearsome sibling: the KQi3 Max.

Armed with a motor that’s 29% more powerful and a battery that’s 25% bigger, the Max is the KQi3 Pro on steroids. Think of a wolf compared to a sheepdog.

Sure, it’ll cost you more, but with those 9 extra miles and self-healing tires comes an altogether better scooter that can take the wear and tear of long-range rides in its stride.

NIU KQi3 Pro Tires in Motion

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the NIU KQi3 Max:

While the KQi3 Pro comes with a plucky 486Wh battery, the Max ups the ante considerably by packing 608Wh. This translates into a 40-mile maximum range, though, as to be expected, under real-world conditions you can expect closer to 28 miles.

Josh Riding the NIU KQi3 Pro On a Sidewalk

This bigger battery is backed up by the same battery management system, meaning you can ride safely in the knowledge that it’s always operating within safe limits.

The other big difference between the Pro and Max is the latter’s more powerful 450W motor. Its peak power of 900W outstrips the Pro’s 700W output, delivering an acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 24 mph. This makes it 14% quicker off the line and 20% faster when ridden at full tilt.

NIU KQi3 Pro Chassis in Motion

And then you have its all-important ride quality. Much like the KQi3 Pro, the Max is exquisitely designed to promote comfort and stability. Its 21.3-inch wide handlebars are home to an ergonomically designed control center that includes one of the best thumb throttles that I’ve tested.

The handlebars work in cahoots with the long and wide deck (complete with a kickplate that lets you lean into the ride for greater weight distribution) to ensure riders of up to 265 lbs feel secure. The wobble-free stem, meanwhile, stretches 39.5 inches above the deck to prevent taller riders from having to stoop.

NIU KQi3 Pro Handlebars

Sure, the Max doesn’t come with suspension. But this is largely mitigated by a pair of plush 9.5-inch tires that emphatically absorb the majority of shocks and vibrations that a city can throw at you. Importantly, though, they are self-healing thanks to a gel lining that instantly seals punctures.

NIU KQi3 Pro Chassis

Elsewhere, you’ll find some of NIU’s signature features, including the effortlessly cool halo headlight, and a large taillight that delivers extra visibility.

NIU KQi3 Pro Headlight Beam

This focus on safety extends to the brakes. The headline here is a regenerative braking system that not only recharges your battery but kicks in as soon as you release the throttle, therefore prolonging the life of the dual disc brakes. Together, the brakes will bring you to a stop from 15 mph in just 2.2 meters – pretty impressive, if you ask me.

Impressive is a word I would use to describe this scooter in general. If you’re searching for a low-maintenance long-range scooter that has a sleek aesthetic and is equally as reliable, then the NIU KQi3 Max is the one for you.

SPLACH Titan Overview:

Ask me which electric scooter I think represents the best value for money and I’d have two words for you: SPLACH Titan.

Titan by name and titanic by nature, this model boasts dual 1000W motors, a hefty 52V 20.8Ah battery, and one of the plushest suspension setups you’ll find anywhere. This spec sheet is what you’d expect to find on a scooter that costs upwards of $2,000.

But here’s the clincher: the SPLACH Titan costs less than $1,250. No, that’s not a typo. In minimizing the profit it makes, SPLACH has unleashed a model that performs like a Porsche but comes with the price tag of a second-hand Toyota. Indeed, no similarly priced competitor gets close to reaching the heights so effortlessly scaled by this humdinger.

SPLACH Titan Yellow LEDs

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the SPLACH Titan:

So, how high do these heights reach? Let’s begin with the battery. This 52V 20.8Ah monster has a maximum range of 44 miles in its considerable armory – or 29 miles under real-world conditions when speed, rider weight, and terrain are taken into account. No other scooter in its price class comes close to the range available here.

SPLACH Titan Front Motor

This barely plausible value-for-money extends to the 52V 1000W motors. Let's consider the fact that the Titan’s acceleration rate of 0-25 mph in 4.9 seconds is 8% faster than the popular and vastly more expensive Apollo Ghost, while its 37 mph top speed is a like-for-like match.

But the Titan isn’t just about raw power – it has buckets of grace, too. Its well-calibrated front and rear suspension prevents the scooter from bottoming out, while its 9-inch tires provide cushioned contact with the ground. They’re also extra thick at 3 inches and have a hybrid tread pattern, making them well-suited to all types of terrain.

SPLACH Titan Rear Tire

If you have some extra cash to spend then you may want to opt for the Titan with 10-inch tires instead; the advantage here is increased balance and traction, though either version will leave you with a broad grin on your face.

Completing the Titan’s munitions in the ride quality department are its ultra-wide 27-inch handlebars, elevated ground clearance, and rock-solid wobble-free stem. It also benefits from an ergonomic cockpit that enables you to switch between single/dual motor and eco/turbo modes, whilst keeping tabs on your battery life via the display.

SPLACH Titan Ultra-Wide Handlebars

Elsewhere, its front and rear disc brakes will bring you to a safe stop from 15 mph in 2.4 meters. Its customizable lighting rig is one of the best and most vibrant in the industry, too.

SPLACH Titan Disc Brake

All of these components come together to deliver a balanced, comfortable, and adaptable ride suitable for riders up to 220 lbs. This is perhaps the one area where the Titan comes up short – it’d be nicer to have a higher load-bearing capacity. It does, however, have a deck-to-handlebar height of 42 inches, making it perfectly suited to taller riders.

Josh on SPLACH Titan

With everything this scooter has to offer, it’s no surprise that it falls in the select group of scooters that have the IT Factor. Throughout my rigorous hands-on tests, I’ve been extremely impressed with its performance. As a result, I recommend it highly to anyone wanting a fantastic all-terrain model at an exceptionally low price.

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

Mantis King GT Overview:

What do you get when you take all that is great about a Mantis scooter and feed it steroids? The Mantis King GT – that’s what. This new and improved titan of Kaboo’s beloved range has upped the ante in every conceivable way, and we couldn’t be more blown away.

Take, for instance, the Samsung 60V 24Ah battery that can deliver a monumental maximum range of 56 miles. Or the upgraded dual 30A sinewave controllers that grant you jaw-dropping accelerative control. Perhaps the adjustable hydraulic suspension will be what captures your heart?

Josh With Mantis King GT

Everywhere you look the King GT is a real statement of intent. Priced at $2,495 – just shy of $200 more than the impressive but lower-key Mantis V2 – if it's unbridled power you’re after then this behemoth represents incredible value for money. The best Mantis scooter yet? It might just be.

Mantis King GT Rear Tire

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the Mantis King GT:

First, let’s look at a battery that may one day go down in folklore. The Samsung 60V 24Ah unit has a pool of 21700 cells in its armory, meaning it can deliver ultra-efficient power for a long period. This exceptional performance gives it the capacity to deliver a maximum range of 56 miles off one charge, though realistically you’re looking at closer to 38 miles when riding in the fastest settings.

Mantis King GT Handlebars

Think of everything you can do within that range. That’s pretty much your entire weekend sorted. Plus, it takes just 6 hours to charge. Thankfully, it comes with two chargers to make that happen.

Mantis King GT Charging Ports

And with dual 1100 motors and those 30A sinewave controllers, what a weekend it will be. The King GT can reach a top speed of 43 mph and delivers a barely believable super smooth acceleration; it’s like putting a saddle on a tiger or capturing nuclear fusion in a jar. It has to be seen and felt.

Mantis King GT Front 1100W Motor

The Mantis King GT is billed as a “luxury commuter” scooter, but we think this is doing its credentials as a performance scooter a huge disservice. Perhaps this description is driven by its buttery smooth dual hydraulic suspension, which you can adjust to fit your preferences. This is supported by 10-inch pneumatic (and hybrid) tires that caress all but the rockiest of surfaces – indeed, the King GT isn’t just made for city streets, but off-road trails, too.

Mantis King GT Adjustable Hydraulic Suspension

For such a hefty scooter, the GT is as good to steer and control as it is on the eyes. Its 26-inch wide handlebars – an improvement on the 24-inches offered by previous models – really add to the sense of stability you get when whizzing along at high speeds, while the grippy, spacious deck allows you to find a perfect standing position. It also comes with a kickplate that lets you lean into turns for even greater nimbleness.

Mantis King GT Deck

This inherent agility is supplemented in no small part by the Zoom hydraulic brakes, which go toe-to-toe with the V2’s best-in-class offerings to deliver exceptional stopping power.

Mantis King GT Rear Tire and Brake

And the mic-dropping highlights don’t end there. The TFT display is next-level awesome; besides giving you easy access to all your key stats like speed, battery life, and mileage, you can program a host of custom settings. And crucially, the display remains clear in even the brightest of sunshine.

Mantis King GT TFT Display

Weighing in at 74 lbs, it would be a stretch to claim that the Mantis King GT is lightweight. It can, however, be carried in short bursts, while its easy-to-use folding mechanism means it can be transported and stored with relative ease.

Mantis King GT Folded

Did I mention that this beauty comes with password protection? That’s right: to power up this bad boy, the correct digits have to be entered. This won’t stop somebody from lobbing it into the back of a van, however, so make sure you secure it with additional measures.

Dramatic Shot of Mantis King GT Frame

Coming complete with an IPX5 water-resistance rating, it’s safe to say the Mantis King GT is no fair-weather friend. It will withstand downpours and can be ridden through puddles, but, as we always say, it’s best to avoid pushing any electric scooter too hard when it comes to rainy days.

Mantis King GT Robust Chassis

If there’s a criticism, it’s that, for all the snazzy lights, the headlight is a little on the dim side. While we’re big fans of the deck lighting that lines the sides, the headlight needs some support from extra purchases.

Mantis King GT Lights

But we’re splitting hairs here, as without doubt, the King GT is a high water mark in the evolution of the Mantis range. If it’s an all-terrain juggernaut you’re after, this scooter will have you covered for miles and miles. For $2,495, the GT is a no-brainer for those who want to take their performance scooter obsession to the next level.

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

EMOVE Cruiser S Overview:

Pound for pound, no scooter offers more range than the 62 miles of the EMOVE Cruiser S. Priced at a bargain-basement $1,399 – the same as the original – the upgraded ‘S’ model screams value in every department.

Among a host of features designed for long-distance riding, an optional seat attachment offers extra comfort, while large springs and shocks deliver a riding experience that is perfectly primed for urban terrain.

Add in a clutch of excellent new upgrades – including a Sine Wave controller that makes the throttle response serenely smooth, a new thumb throttle that’s comfortable to use on long rides, and self-healing tires – and what you have is a successor that somehow manages to improve upon one of the industry’s most beloved models.

Josh on the EMOVE Cruiser S

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the EMOVE Cruiser S:

As we get closer to the end of this list – and the truly titanic ranges in it – the price tags tend to inflate.

More mileage, of course, doesn’t come cheap – or does it?

EMOVE Cruiser S Rear of Chassis

With the EMOVE Cruiser S, it does. A 52V 30Ah LG battery equips this scooter with a 62-mile range that most can only dream of (48 miles when ridden fast). It’s a rare, beautiful anomaly in the electric scooter world – a long-range model that’s affordable.

Not only is this extended range super convenient – it’s also great news for your battery. Charging it less frequently will prolong its health, and help extend its shelf life for many rides to come. When your battery does run dry, a full recharge takes between 9 and 12 hours.

EMOVE Cruiser S Accelerating

The battery pack is also protected, courtesy of a smart battery management system. By regulating the amount of electricity flowing in and out of it, this savvy system helps guard against the perils of over-heating, over-charging, and over-discharging to aid the long-term prospects of your scooter’s insides.

Helpfully, you’ll always have a near-granular insight into how much ride time your Cruiser S has left thanks to the battery voltmeter on the left side of the cockpit.

EMOVE Cruiser S Key-Lock and Buttons

Elsewhere, there are features galore. The newly upgraded, clearer, and brighter 4-color display shows your speed, riding mode, and distance traveled. A key-start ignition is handy for deterring thieves, while a headlight and turn signals help you stay safe at night.

But the features that we love the most are the ones most relevant for keeping you comfortable on long rides.

EMOVE Cruiser S Display and Throttle

Firstly, there’s the new Sine Wave controller. This marks a first for electric scooters, with the Cruiser S being the only single-motor model to feature one. The benefit here is improved throttle response. It’s now effortlessly smooth, which you’ll come to appreciate on particularly long rides. Combined with the upgraded thumb throttle, few commuter scooters can claim to be as comfortable.

Then there’s the aptly named cruise control. This feature allows you to travel at a constant speed, without having to engage the throttle in perpetuity.

Josh Riding the EMOVE Cruiser S

And to cap things off, you have the optional seat attachment, which you can get your hands on for $65. Large, plush, and comfortable, the seat is essential – particularly if you’re planning to milk its 62-mile range.

The scooter backs up its impressive mileage and comfortability credentials with its safety and suspension setups. Its semi-hydraulic brakes – which you’ll observe on just a slim handful of scooters in the Cruiser’s price class – give it a laudable braking distance of just 2.6 meters from 15 mph.

EMOVE Cruiser S Semi-Hydraulic Disc Brake

As for shock absorption, this comes courtesy of two large springs at the front and a duo of shocks at the rear. Combined, they offer superb levels of ride quality. Plus, the tubeless car-grade tires – which, with a whopping profile of 10 x 2.75 inches – offer lots to love in the way of shock absorption and agility.

EMOVE Cruiser S Front Springs

When it comes to durability, the frame is constructed of a dependable aluminum alloy and steel, with rubber, griptape, and reinforced plastic used for cosmetic finishes. Its sturdy build doesn’t just weather the wear and tear of consistent use, though. Its impact can also be seen in its load-bearing capacity where it can support riders of up to 352 lbs. This makes it an industry-leading electric scooter for heavy adults.

You can adjust the handlebar height via the telescopic stem to match your height, too. That said, its maximum deck-to-handlebar height is 39 inches, making it a little too short for riders over 6 ft.

EMOVE Cruiser S Telescopic Stem

It’s also worth pointing out that the scooter tips the scales at just 52 lbs, making it manageable to carry for short bursts. This is relatively light – especially when you consider that the average weight of other long-range models is 88 lbs (based on 26 scooters that have maximum ranges greater than 50 miles).

EMOVE Cruiser S Folded

Considering its price tag, we’ve established that the Cruiser S punches well above its weight when it comes to range, but what about pace? Well, with a rear-mounted 52V 1000W motor, it accelerates to 15 mph in 3.8 seconds and 25 mph in 10.3 seconds before hitting its top speed of 33 mph.

While its single motor lacks the same power as the market’s dual-motor alternatives, its torque and acceleration are perfect for riders that want a scooter that’s at the top end of the entry-level category. Besides, its monumental range, exquisite ride quality, and exceptional value for money make it a leading contender for any long-distance rider.

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

NAMI Klima Overview:

NAMI is a brand that can count some of the industry’s best electric scooters among its roster. The Burn-e Viper. The Burn-e 2. The Burn-e 2 Max. These are models that raised the bar and changed the game.

The only problem was their eye-watering price tags. The NAMI Klima MAX is a response to this. Costing significantly less, it encapsulates all that we loved about its forebears – incredible suspension, scintillating power, extraordinary range, and dizzying customization options – while offering a lighter, more agile profile.

This is a scooter that’s once again destined to strike terror into the hearts of its rivals and leave customers in a state of doughy-eyed reverie.

Josh Riding the NAMI Klima in a Woodland

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the NAMI Klima:

The Klima Max is the souped-up version of the standard Klima, which costs $500 less. The difference between them is the Max’s superior 60V 30Ah LG battery, complete with 21700 cells for better performance. This translates into a mammoth maximum range of 60 miles (or 47 miles when you account for periods of fast acceleration, cruising, and multiple stops) – 10 miles more than what the Klima can offer.

NAMI Klima Neck

When the battery needs replenishment, the good news is it can be fully recharged in just 7 hours when using the fast charger that comes included in the box.

Of course, a long-range and quick charging time isn’t enough to qualify a scooter for a place on our coveted list. Ride comfort is essential, too, and it's here where the Klima Max excels.

NAMI Klima Being Ridden Fast

Harnessing the same fully adjustable hydraulic suspension system that has made the NAMI name synonymous with cutting-edge performance, riding this beaut is like hovering on clouds. By twisting the red dial above each spring, you can configure compression and rebound rates to your weight and terrain. It's so good, that I rated its shock absorption a near-perfect 9.5 out of 10.

NAMI Klima Adjustable Suspension

This show-stopping feature is augmented by the 10 x 3-inch tubeless tires. They not only provide oodles of cushioning but also grip the ground like limpets. The result is a supremely comfortable, balanced ride, meaning wheel spin is controlled and aggressive cornering is guaranteed.

NAMI Klima Rear Wheel

Add in the ergonomic thumb throttle and a pair of 40Ah Sine Wave controllers, and what you have is a scooter that’s quite possibly the smoothest operator on the market.

NAMI Klima Cockpit

And if all of that wasn’t enough, the IP65 water-resistant display gives you access to a smorgasbord of P-settings that allow you to make the experience even more tailored to your needs. Here, you can create an entire riding mode based on your preferences. For example, if you live in a hilly area, you may want to funnel more power to the front motor than the one at the rear so that the scooter pulls you up hills, as opposed to pushing you.

NAMI Klima Anti-Glare Display

On the topic of power, it’s armed with dual 60V 1000W motors. Combined, they’ll take you to its 42 mph top speed in a matter of seconds. To put this into perspective, it accelerates from 0-15 mph in a blistering 1.9 seconds, while it hits 25 mph in just 2.9. Of all the scooters that I’ve tested – and I’ve tested a lot – it has the fastest acceleration rate.

Good job that its Logan 2-piston hydraulic brakes can bring you to a complete stop in a whiplashing 2.1 meters, then.

NAMI Klima Hydraulic Disc Brake

With all that power you’ll be glad to hear that the 27-inch-wide handlebars maximize stability, while the grippy deck grants a bounty of room for your feet. The wobble-free stem, meanwhile, stands 42 inches high from the deck, making it a great option for taller riders.

Josh Standing With the NAMI Klima

There’s also the impressive lighting rig that serves as a trusty sidekick for long-range rides that see you riding into the night. The 2000-lumen headlight could illuminate the Grand Canyon, while the bright and responsive taillight is supported by turn signals to keep your intentions to other road users visible.

So, there you have it. The NAMI Klima Max. Perhaps the biggest triumph yet from a brand that keeps on pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for electric scooters.

NAMI Burn-e 2

Performance Report:

Tester: Josh Frisby (190 lbs, 6.1 ft)

*Based on my tests and assessments

NAMI Burn-e 2 Overview:

The NAMI Burn-e 2 is to scooters what Tom Brady is to quarterbacks. It’s simply the best there is and ever has been. You’d need an afternoon to get through its highlight reel.

But we have a job to do here, so let’s dissect this special, game-changing scooter. A scooter that took the rule book, reimagined it and sent powerhouses like Dualtron running home crying for their mommies. A scooter that boasts a realistic range that 99% of other models could only dream of.

From its outstanding hydraulic suspension, integrated steering damper, and extraordinarily large frame, the NAMI Burn-e 2 achieves its title of best-in-class ride quality. Combined with its formidable range credentials, it’s worth every cent.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Imposing Frame

The Good:

The Bad:

Why I Recommend the NAMI Burn-e 2:

Propelled into the stratosphere by a gargantuan 72V 28Ah battery, the Burn-e 2 has a ridiculous 90 miles in its tank. Yep – ridiculous. As for realistic conditions? You can still expect a staggering 50 miles even when unleashing the full fury of this monster.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Front Tire

Expect a recharge time of 6-8 hours, which is remarkable considering other batteries of a similar size would usually take around 16-20 hours to be fully juiced up. Even the charger comes with an inbuilt fan for temperature regulation. Stop showing off, NAMI.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Charging Ports Open

Joining the battery in this onslaught are dual 72V 1000W motors and a pair of powerful sinewave controllers. This formidable quartet delivers a level of performance that we are yet to see from another scooter in its price class. Aside from its extraordinary range, the Burn-e 2 can hit 15 mph from a standstill in a peerless 1.8 seconds, and reach its top speed of 45 mph effortlessly. The secret sauce is in those 72V motors. No other scooter in our list has this rating, which puts the NAMI Burn-e 2 into a league of its own when we boil things down to pure power.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear Motor

As for hills… What hills? The Burn-e 2 will make you forget they exist. Get over yourself, San Francisco.

But Tom Brady isn’t the greatest quarterback of all time because of his power and stamina alone. Likewise, the Burn-e 2 has tonnes more in its locker. Let’s start with its best-in-class ride quality that’s built on the foundations of a stunning adjustable suspension system that revolutionizes the mechanics behind rebounding and compression. The result of this ground-breaking setup is a perfect 10 out of 10 score on our scale of shock absorption. No other scooter comes close.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rebound Dial

The dual hydraulic springs are effectively supported by the 11-inch tires, which offer outstanding grip and control. As standard, the scooter comes with basic, but reliable nylon tires. We, however, urge you to get PMT tires fitted as they transform its capabilities. Think better grip, faster cornering, and less wheel spin.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear of Tire and Suspension

As for build quality? Again, the Burn-e 2 has no equal. It’s the best-built scooter we’ve tested – and we’ve tested a lot of scooters. The level of detail on show is astounding: from extra wide handlebars and built-in steering damper; to waterproof motor connectors, turn signals that can be seen from all angles, and the matte black aviation-grade frame melded to menacing girders; to the ginormous, grippy deck and carbon fiber stem. Everything about this model is sheer quality.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear of Chassis

All of this would be wasted without some serious brakes, of course, and the Burn-e 2 ensures no corners are cut. Working in cahoots with the tires and re-gen brakes, the LOGAN hydraulics utilized here are exceptional. Expect to come to a complete stop from 15 mph in a preposterous 1.8 meters, which is again, industry-leading, as with everything associated with this miracle machine.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Rear Disc Brake

Guess what else is industry-leading? The next-gen interface. Think you know customization? Think again. This scooter will floor you with the sheer breadth of possibilities available at your fingertips. Practically every node of this scooter can be personalized to create a riding experience tailor-made for you.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Display

The cockpit also includes a hidden USB port, as well as a secret turbo mode button that adds an extra thrust of power to the motors to summon every morsel of their 5,040W peak output.

NAMI Burn-e 2 USB Charging Port

Even the NAMI Burn-e 2’s headlight is next level; it has an elongated shape that dissipates light in the center to cast a wide, blinding beam. The supporting cast includes swaggy deck lights that would silence Snoop Dog, along with hugely impressive turn signals. Quite honestly, there’s no lighting rig like this.

NAMI Burn-e 2 Light Package

And if all of that wasn’t enough, it also comes with not one, but two water-resistance ratings – IP55 and IP56 – which together protect every nook and cranny from the effects of rain and splashes.

As a result of listening to customer feedback, the NAMI Burn-e 2 has it all: style, substance, and a wealth of industry-leading innovations. Take a bow, NAMI. This scooter raises the bar to a level we’ve yet to see another scooter come close to reaching.

Testing & Analysis

How Did I Test the Scooters?

To find the 9 best long-range electric scooters, I tested 42 models and assessed each across their maximum and real-world range. But, one thing was for sure, a long mileage wasn’t enough to win a place on my coveted list. Ride quality, reliability, charge times, battery size, battery quality, and battery management systems were all part of the assessment.

These tests were carried out as part of a wider, standardized testing process that I employ for every electric scooter that I review. Find out more about how I test below:

Long-Range Electric Scooters That I Tested:

Click through the photo carousel to see all of the scooters that I tested for this guide.

Test Criteria:

Maximum & Real-World Range

These are the headline stats that most riders will notice when looking for a long-range electric scooter.

A model’s maximum range, as indicated by the manufacturer, refers to its mileage when ridden under best-case conditions. Typically, this includes a 165 lb rider, flat terrain, and riding in the slowest setting. While these figures are useful for comparing performance, they don’t paint the full picture.

Long Range Electric Scooters

As a result, I reported on how each scooter performed under real-world conditions – including me as a 190 lb rider, periods of fast acceleration, cruising, and multiple stops. This data was then used to assess range relative to price to identify the top performers for different budgets.

Based on my tests, as well as third-party data, the real-world range typically equates to 60% of the maximum.

Further Information:

How I Test Real-World Range

Battery Size

Electric scooters with the longest range in each price category invariably have the largest batteries relative to their peers. To determine the size of each scooter’s unit, I reported on their voltage (V), amp-hours (Ah), and watt-hours (Wh).

The voltage of a battery refers to the strength of its electrical charge. Amp-hours, meanwhile, indicate how much electricity can be supplied from the battery to other electrical components (like the motors) in an hour. And finally, watt-hours are used to measure battery capacity – it’s calculated by multiplying voltage by amp-hours.

SPLACH Mukuta Removable Battery

In general, the higher the voltage, amp-hours, and watt-hours, the bigger the battery’s capacity for stored energy. Here, a higher figure typically equated to a longer range.

Battery Quality

Not all electric scooter batteries are made equal. A scooter’s long-term range (i.e. over the course of years) is largely determined by the quality of its battery cells. To address this, I reported on the brand and type of cells used.

FST batteries, for example, are relatively standard units, but while they perform well in the short term, their performance degrades over time (as to be expected). Higher quality batteries made by LG, Samsung, Dynavolt, and Panasonic, on the other hand, can perform at their optimum for up to 500 charge cycles. By comparison, FST batteries typically deliver 200-300 cycles at peak performance. The difference between the two can equate to years of use depending on how often you charge your scooter. Other factors can cause a battery to degrade, too, but charge cycles are one that you have greater control over.

60V 35Ah Battery

Battery Management Systems

Battery management systems are crucial for regulating the flow of electricity. By protecting against over-voltage, low-voltage, over-discharge, over-current, and over-temperature, they keep batteries operating within safe parameters.

They also report key information back to the scooter's display, allowing you to view things like battery level, temperature readouts, and error codes that correspond to certain issues.

Electric Scooter Controller

With the above in mind, I made sure to only select the scooters that had battery management systems.

Charge Time

Long-range rides can deplete your battery, so a fast recharge time (within reason) is preferred.

To assess how long this takes, I considered the manufacturer’s specs, alongside my calculations where I divided each battery’s amp hours (Ah) by the amperage (A) of the included charger.

Expert Tip: If you opt for a scooter that has a battery bigger than 15Ah then you may want to purchase a fast charger to significantly reduce the charge time.

Electric Scooter Charger Plugged Into Scooter

Ride Quality

Ride quality is fundamental to the appeal of a long-range electric scooter.

Aside from testing each scooter hands-on to garner insights into their comfortability and handling, I also conducted several assessments to determine how the geometry and shock-absorbing profile of each influenced their riding experience.

To do this, I first measured their handlebar width, usable deck space, and deck-to-handlebar height. The wider the handlebars, the greater the control. The bigger the usable deck space, the larger the room to find a natural riding stance. And, the higher the deck-to-handlebar height, the better your posture (this also allowed me to identify the suitability of each scooter for riders of different heights).

Josh Cruising on the Apollo City Pro

Then, to assess each scooter’s ability to soak up shocks, I tested their rebound and compression rates, the balance of shock absorption across the front and rear of the scooter, the amount of travel that the swingarms and suspension provided, and whether there was any bottoming out. All of this coalesced into a shock absorption rating out of 10 – where 1 was extremely stiff and 10 was extremely soft.

Tires are just as important as shock absorption – especially for scooters that don’t have a suspension system. To assess performance in this area, I paid particular attention to agility and traction.

Fluid Vista in Motion

The final assessments were made on how well each scooter responded to different inputs (i.e. is the throttle smooth or jerky, can you carve from side to side, is there a cruise control feature and if so how effective is it at maintaining speed, etc).

Imagine it: you’re on mile 25, in the middle of nowhere, when you hear a pop. Flat tire. Disaster! Reliability is crucial for long rides, so the tests that I conducted took into account durability.

Here, I reported on the quality of the tires (i.e. their ability to prevent punctures), the rigidity of each scooter (i.e. checking for vulnerabilities that could cause structural issues such as stem wobble), and the protection against wet weather (i.e. IP ratings). All of these factors were considered relative to price.

Which Electric Scooter Has the Longest Range?

The Dualtron Storm Limited has the longest range of all the electric scooters in our 140+ model database. However, while it has a maximum range of 137 miles, it is uncomfortable to ride for prolonged periods.

As a result, we crown the NAMI Burn-e 2 as having the longest range (90 miles) since its sublime ride quality makes it a pleasure to ride non-stop.

How Far Can You Travel on an Electric Scooter?

This depends on the type of battery. There are two areas of a battery that determine the maximum distance that you can travel, and these include:

  • Power (Voltage)
  • Size (Amp-hours)

Multiplying power (Voltage) by size (Amp-hours) provides a Watt-hour (Wh) figure. Watt-hours is a way to measure the capacity of the battery and therefore gain insight into the amount of energy it holds. The higher the Wh figure, the greater the maximum range.

For instance, an entry-level scooter like the NIU KQi3 Pro has a 48V 10.1Ah battery that holds 486Wh of energy and 31 miles of maximum range.

On the other hand, a high-performance scooter like the NAMI Burn-e 2 has a 72V 28Ah battery that holds 2016Wh of energy and 90 miles of maximum range.

It's also important to note that controllers (the devices that control the flow of energy from the battery to the motors) and other factors like the payload, terrain, and speed that you travel all affect battery performance.

Plus, the maximum ranges quoted by manufacturers are based on a best-case riding scenario that often includes a 165 lb rider, flat terrain, and keeping the scooter in its slowest speed setting. Under realistic conditions, you should expect less mileage. As a rule of thumb, if you ride aggressively (i.e. at top speeds), you will see a 35-45% drop in range.

How Can I Increase the Range of my Electric Scooter?

There are a couple of things you can do to make your battery last longer and improve the mileage of your electric scooter, but it mostly comes down to your riding style.

If you like to hit top speeds as often as you can, this will use more power and drastically reduce how long your battery will last. Moderating your speed and slowing down will prolong battery life, letting you ride further. For example, on most high-performance scooters you can choose the riding mode and select if you want both motors or just one engaged. Putting the scooter into the lowest speed setting with just a single motor will significantly improve range. Alternatively, if you have a need for speed, turn both motors on but keep the scooter in the slowest riding mode for more rapid acceleration curves whilst prolonging battery life.

Can You Overcharge an Electric Scooter?

As with all battery-driven electronics, electric scooters are at risk of overcharging if they’re plugged in for longer than the stated charging time. This means that in the long run, your battery won’t hold its power for as long and you’ll likely have to replace it.

Many scooters come with battery management systems to help prevent this from happening. However, it’s still important to only charge the battery when you need to and only as long as the manual states.

How Long Do Electric Scooter Batteries Last?

This depends on the scooter you choose and the battery it’s fitted with. Each battery has a different cell type.

Cell type plays an important role in how many times a battery can be recharged before its peak performance declines.

Chinese FST batteries are often used by manufacturers to bring the cost of the scooter down, however, this comes at the cost of the battery not holding its peak performance for as long as higher quality LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and Dynavolt batteries.

Good quality batteries, like those mentioned, typically deliver 500-600 charge cycles without compromising performance. Based on this data, if you were to charge two times a week, your battery would remain at full capacity for around 5-6 years. On the other hand, cheaper Chinese FST batteries deteriorate faster giving you around 1-2 years less performance compared to their higher-quality counterparts.

Those with battery management systems will also last longer. These systems are designed to optimize battery performance by protecting against short-circuiting, overcurrent, overcharging, and over-discharging.

Why Won’t my Electric Scooter Hold a Charge?

There could be a few reasons for this, the first being that there’s a problem with the battery itself. This could be because it’s old, damaged, or needs replacing. It could also occur as a result of overcharging, which can cause the battery to lose power more quickly. On the other hand, leaving long periods between charges (3 months or more) can cause battery damage.

The problem may also lay with your charger. If it isn’t charging your scooter correctly, you aren’t getting the fresh surge of power you think you are when you connect your scooter to the mains.

In both instances, it’s best to seek professional help to diagnose the issue and take the correct steps to fix it.

How Often Should I Charge my Electric Scooter?

The amount of time varies from model to model, but the exact time for each is usually specified in the scooter’s manual.

It’s important to make sure that you don’t exceed the number of hours stated as this can lead to overcharging, resulting in battery damage.

Similarly, make sure you don’t leave it too long between charges either. Even if you aren’t using your scooter, it’s important to keep the battery level topped up. Letting it drain and leaving it that way can cause just as much harm as overcharging it can.

How Much Does an Electric Scooter Battery Cost?

The cost of a battery depends on the type of battery you’re buying. Several factors affect price, including power (Voltage), size (Amp-hours), and cell type (Chinese FST, LG, Samsung, etc).

Smaller batteries, like those found in budget scooters like the NIU KQi3 Pro (48V 10.1Ah FST), can cost as little as $220, whereas large high-quality batteries found in performance scooters, like the Mantis King GT (60V 24Ah Samsung), can cost upwards of $600.

When Should a Scooter Battery Be Replaced?

High-quality scooter batteries (including LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and Dynavolt) will hold their peak performance for 5-6 years (if you were to charge them twice a week). Cheap Chinese FST batteries last for 3-4 years at the same rate of usage.

Based on the data above, if you want to continue to enjoy the maximum performance your electric scooter has to offer, then it's best to replace them once the battery has begun to deteriorate. Alternatively, swap out the battery once it no longer performs beyond 70% of its peak.

Which Battery is Best For an Electric Scooter?

Lithium-ion batteries are the preferred battery for electric scooters. They deliver a superior performance thanks to their increased power and longer lifespan. You’ll find them on the majority of scooter models. The best brands available are usually those provided by big tech companies like LG or Samsung. Apollo is particularly fond of using Dynavolt batteries, which are often found on motorcycles.

  5. 70 miles on single drive in eco mode from Fluid Free Ride web site.
Also, we don’t know what the speed is with these settings?
I prefer to ride at 18 mph and have the max range, so what range can we get here?

    • Hi Antony,

You are correct that the Wolf Warrior has a maximum mileage, under prime conditions, of 70 miles.

Eco mode limits you to about 20 mph so you should be able to take full advantage of the mileage.

Thanks, enjoy cruising around on the Wolf!
